The D.O. Rueda, located in Castilla y León, mainly in the province of Valladolid, is one of the great references for Spanish white wines. Its emblematic variety is Verdejo, which finds its finest expression here.
The vineyards lie at roughly 700 to 870 metres of altitude. The climate is continental, with long, cold winters, short springs and hot, dry summers.
One of Rueda's most characteristic features is its pebbly soils, stony and well drained. The combination of altitude, soil and day-night temperature differences is especially favourable for Verdejo.
What are Rueda wines like?
Whites are the star. Young wines are usually fresh, aromatic, fruity and with good acidity. Verdejo also brings volume on the palate and its characteristic slightly bitter finish.
But Rueda is not limited to the typical young Verdejo. The appellation allows wines of different styles and ageing, and since 2008 it has also covered red and rosé wines.
