Woodford Reserve Distillery
Woodford Reserve is nestled among beautiful horse farms; in fact, it is one of the few places in Kentucky where the state's two most famous products—bourbon whiskey and thoroughbred horses—can be seen maturing together. The art of making high-quality bourbon originated at the Woodford Reserve Distillery, a National Historic Landmark, in 1812. History is felt in every corner. The history of bourbon is the history of Kentucky, and the history of the United States.
The Five Sources of Flavor
Grain Recipe
Woodford Reserve is made with a grain recipe consisting of 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley. This recipe balances the sweetness of corn with the spicy touch of rye and the nutty flavor of malt, creating the foundation for the world's most flavorful bourbon.
Water Source
The water we use to make Woodford Reserve comes directly from the distillery. It is naturally filtered by the limestone deposits beneath our property. Free of iron and rich in minerals, it is an essential ingredient in the process.
Fermentation
Our fermentation process is one of the longest in the industry. This additional time, along with our unique yeast strain, creates great depth of character and a complex range of flavors.
Distillation
The perfectly balanced flavor of Woodford Reserve comes from a careful blending of whiskey distilled in copper pot stills and whiskey distilled in column stills. No other whiskey can boast such a combination of flavors.
Maturation
Woodford Reserve matures in new, charred white oak barrels made in-house. The barrel is a key element in our process, as it imparts flavor, complexity, and balance. That is why we make, toast, and char the bourbon barrels in our own cooperage. After filling, the barrels age in our exclusive temperature-controlled warehouses until they reach their optimal point of maturation.
